Day 3 - Arrive Auckland

Monday, March 5th, 2018

City SkylineWelcome to Auckland, New Zealand's largest city. We are met by our guide and taken to our waiting coach to enjoy a panoramic tour of the "City of Sails". We will see many of the city’s major sights including Auckland Harbour Bridge, Mount Victoria, the beautiful waterfront and viaduct, Bastion Point, Mission Bay, historic Cornwall Park, One Tree Hill and Parnell Village. After lunch we make our way to the hotel and have free time to rest or explore on our own before dinner.

Day 4 - Auckland - Paihia

Tuesday, March 6th, 2018

Beautiful Bay of IslandsWe rise early today and after breakfast make our way to Paihia in the North Country. This afternoon we enjoy one of the most popular cruises in the Bay of Islands; our destination Motukokako Island and the famous "Hole in the Rock". We will navigate a passage through the Hole and into the majestic Grand Cathedral Cave. Afterwards, we transfer to our hotel and have some time to relax before dinner.

Day 5 - Waitangi Treaty House - Russell

Wednesday, March 7th, 2018

WaitangiTreatyHouseToday, we visit Russell, the first capital of New Zealand and one of the first European settlements. Rich in history, Russell has shops, services, and plenty of old charm. Next is the Waitangi Treaty House where in 1840, the Treaty of Waitangi between the Maori people and the British Crown was signed. This afternoon is free to relax or do more exploring on our own.

Day 6 - Auckland - Waiheke Island

WaihekeIslandAfter breakfast we board our coach for the drive back to Auckland. Late this afternoon we take a short ferry ride from Auckland pier to Waiheke Island. The Island is considered the jewel in the crown of the Hauraki Gulf. It boasts world class wines, award-winning olive oils, and pristine beaches with stunning sea views. Here, we will enjoy a lovely Twilight Wine and Dine tour!

Day 7 - Hobbiton - Rotorua - Hangi

Friday, March 9th, 2018

HobbitonWe depart Auckland today bound for the thermal wonderland of Rotorua. On the way, near the town of Matamata, we stop to visit the Hobbiton movie set which was created for Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films. Tonight we visit a local marae to enjoy a Maori Hangi dinner and concert.

Day 8 - Rotorua - Te Puia - Napier

Saturday, March 10th, 2018

Thermal Springs GeyserBefore leaving Rotorua today we visit the Te Puia Thermal Reserve with boiling mud pools, spouting geysers and steaming silica terraces. Next we stop at the historic Government Gardens originally known as Paepaekumana situated on the lake's edge in downtown Rotorua. From here we continue to lunch at the Skyline Restaurant which is based at the top of the Gondola and allows for magnificent panoramic views. After lunch, if you like a little extra excitement, take the included luge ride back down! We drive to Napier and check-in to the hotel. The rest of the evening is free to do as we please.

Day 9 - Napier Sightseeing

ArtDecoCityToday we explore the historic art deco city of Napier located in Hawke’s Bay, the heart of New Zealand’s oldest wine making region and one of the sunniest areas in the country. We see the seafront promenade called Marine Parade, enjoy an Art Deco guided walk and a visit to the Silky Oak Chocolate Factory. Housed in an elegantly restored historic seminary building, Mission Estate is our lunch stop. Here we enjoy a wine tasting, tasty lunch and the sweeping views of Napier city and the coast beyond.

Day 10 - Martinborough - Wellington

MartinboroughHotelToday we leave Napier and drive along the classic New Zealand Wine Trail. We stop in the quaint town of Martinborough packed with colonial charm and featuring over twenty wineries! Here we enjoy a lovely lunch before continuing to the beautiful city of Wellington, New Zealand’s capital. Upon arrival we see a few city sights and enjoy the view from Victoria Lookout. Then, we check into our hotel with the rest of the evening free to enjoy at our leisure.

Day 11 - Wellington

Tuesday, March 13th, 2018

CableCarNestled between a sparkling harbour and rolling green hills, Wellington is renowned for its arts, heritage, culture and native beauty. This morning we enjoy a relaxed walking gourmet tour around the city. Our guide will introduce us to speciality regional tastes in top food places only the locals know. We sample gourmand products such as coffee, chocolate, gelato, and cheeses. Plus we get acquainted with the iconic city architecture and sculptures. This afternoon we have time at leisure. Perhaps take a cable car ride to Kelburn for spectacular city views or experience the waterfront and New Zealand’s national museum - Te Papa.

Day 12 - Picton - Nelson

Wednesday, March 14th, 2018

FerryCrossingWe bid a fond farewell to the North Island as we take the ferry to the South Island. The crossing is about 3 hours, and showcases the extraordinary beauty of Wellington Harbour, the Cook Strait, and the Marlborough Sounds. Sightings of dolphins, whales and fur seals are common, so sit back and enjoy the ride. In Picton, we are met by our driver and head to Nelson for the next two nights.

Day 13 - Abel Tasman

SplitAppleRockAfter breakfast we travel to Kaiteriteri, a town and seaside resort in the Tasman, loved for its beautiful golden sand beach and clear blue-green water. Just off of Kaiteriteri Beach in Abel Tasman National Park is a large boulder, called Split Apple Rock. Legend says, that two gods of Maori legend were fighting over the possession of this large boulder, and to settle the matter, they used their godlike strength to break it in half. Our day here includes time for a kayak to Split Apple, a self-guided walk, and a delightful picnic lunch. Later we return to Nelson with the rest of the evening free to explore on our own.

Day 14 - Kaikoura

KaikouraRangesToday we drive along the east coast of the South Island to Kaikoura. The town has a beautiful setting, as the Seaward Kaikoura mountains, a branch of the Southern Alps, come nearly to the sea at this point on the coast. Kaikoura has become a popular tourist destination, mainly for whale watching.

Day 15 - Christchurch

Avon River in ChristchurchThis morning there is time for those who would like to take an optional Whale Watching excursion (weather permitting). After lunch on our own we will depart for the city of Christchurch. On arrival, we enjoy a brief city sights tour before going to the hotel, and some time to freshen up before dinner.

Day 16 - Lake Tekapo - Queenstown

Church of the Good ShepherdAfter breakfast we depart across the patchwork Canterbury Plains and enter Mackenzie country. A stop is made to view the famous Church of the Good Shepherd at Lake Tekapo before continuing alongside the azure-blue waters of Lake Pukaki into the majestic Southern Alps region dominated by Mount Cook. Later, we carry on via the town of Omarama, and across the stark and beautiful Lindis Pass. From here our journey winds into the orchard district of Cromwell, and the historic gold mining township of Arrowtown before arriving to the beautiful resort area of Queenstown.

Day 17 - Queenstown - Doubtful Sound

DoubtfulSoundSituated at the edge of Fiordland National Park is the lakeside town of Manapouri which is the base for journeys into the glacier-carved wilderness. We travel into this untouched world deep in the heart of the park to the beauty and vastness of Doubtful Sound. We cruise through the glistening water and our first discovery is the silence - a silence broken only by birdsong or the rushing of a distant waterfall. Also, during our cruise the knowledgeable and friendly nature guides share their passion for the region through their commentary, and point out landmarks. They also impart information about the varied wildlife we may see including dolphins, fur seals and the rare Fiordland crested penguin.

Day 18 - Queenstown Free Day

Tuesday, March 20th, 2018

Walter Peak Station Cruise , DinnerEnjoy a free morning to relax, or do some last minute shopping. Later this afternoon we mark our final day in New Zealand with a cruise on beautiful Lake Wakatipu, aboard the vintage steamship TSS Earnslaw. We also visit Walter Peak High Country Station where we see an entertaining and informative demonstration of life in the high country. Dinner tonight is a delicious BBQ meal featuring meats cooked on an outdoor rotisserie. Please note we will walk from our hotel to the Steamer Wharf for departure.

Day 19 - Return Home

We have a relaxed morning and then are taken to the airport to begin our journey home, crossing the International Dateline on route to North America. While the trip may be over, we will relish the fond memories of our amazing experiences in beautiful New Zealand.
